Phonic sessions in Carlton:

  • begin by recapping previous sounds and/or words using flashcards
  • all use the same resources and vocabulary to support consistency
  • regularly include the opportunity to read real and nonsense words
  • take the format of review/revisit, teach, practise, apply,
  • are supported by phonics posters on the walls for children to use
  • are supported by half termly assessments using individual and/or phonics screening tests
  • follow the Read Write Inc Phonics programme
