All reading areas in Carlton:
- have a variety of good quality books, which include a mixture of fiction and non-fiction, some relating to the current topic,
- have books which are well displayed and accessible
- are a defined area
- are engaging, age appropriate, comforting/safe place
- have a display of key words and prompts (these should include promoting the comprehension strategies: prediction, questioning, inference, summarising, clarifying, evaluating, making links)
- give recommendations of books either from children or adults
Reading sessions in Carlton: - include real books so children are exposed to a range of types of books and texts
- allow opportunities for children to read for pleasure using the reading area
- promote the comprehension strategies: prediction, questioning, inference, summarising, clarifying, evaluating, making links
- ensure children are involved in meaningful independent reading activities e.g. reading/phonics/comprehension
- follow the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme in EYFS and Year 1 and where appropriate in Year 2 and Year 3
Phonic sessions in Carlton:
- begin by recapping previous sounds and/or words using flashcards
- all use the same resources and vocabulary to support consistency
- regularly include the opportunity to sort words into real and nonsense words however these can take a variety of forms. E.g. real and rubbish, treasure and trash
- take the format of review/revisit, teach, practise, apply,
- be supported by phonics posters on the walls for children to use
- be assessed each half term using individual and/or phonics screening tests
- follow the Read Write Inc Phonics programme
