English Language is extended throughout the school through the interacting of reading, writing and speaking and listening. Great importance is placed on the teaching of reading, ensuring that each child acquires reading skills as soon as possible, and later learns to use these skills for pleasure and as a means of absorbing information.
A variety of teaching methods are used as appropriate at each stage, with particular emphasis placed upon phonics, letters and sounds books are arranged into book bands. The Oxford Reading Tree Scheme is used in the school as well as supplementary scheme books and real books those not in a reading scheme. Parents are asked to make time to listen to their child read or read along with them when books are brought home from school. Such help and encouragement is invaluable to a child’s progress and enjoyment of the written word. Mathematics is taught within the structured framework of the Numeracy Strategy.
